BRISTOL-UK. What would happen if the plant as one of the robot building materials? Scientists in the UK using a type of microscopic fungus that the body of the plant vegetation to design a robot that can perform tasks such as computer arithmetic.

The developers call it Plasmobot. They were then referred to as robots Plasmobot non-silicon biology that has no fixed form (non-silicon amorphous biological robots).

In designing this Plasmobot, scientists use the plasmodium on the microscopic fungus called physarum polycephalum, which is kind of microscopic fungus that commonly grows in the woods, gardens or moist places.

“Most people think of computers is a hardware device with software designed to perform specific tasks,” said one scientist, Professor Andy Adamatzky quoted from the Press Association, Friday (28/8/2009).

“We’re trying to prove that public opinion is not always true. Evidently, microscopic fungi or plasmodium can perform tasks such as computer thanks to a natural substance it contains, with a special intelligence,” he added.

The team from the University of the West of England, who designed this robot to get funding for 228,000 of a research institute called the Leverhulme Trust to create a robot and doing research on other computing than usual.

In their study, it is known that the plasmodium can complete the complex calculation task and other logic calculations. Previously, they also have shown the ability of this microscopic fungus in transporting and moving an object.

With wheat germ placed nearby, Plasmabot raises similar body swing swing tube so that it can move the wheat germ to other places. Plasmabot also can grow in a certain way when given the stimulation of light or chemicals.
